Dear Friends of KNLT,
Place is of importance to all species. How we think about, and even talk about, a place influences how we treat that place. Lately I’ve been reflecting a lot about our place here in Kentucky and Central Appalachia. This is a geography of extraordinary landscapes and communities with a unique history that has brought us to this point in time. Too often we carry on with our daily lives without knowing or acknowledging that Kentucky and the region are home to globally significant forests that are vital to sustaining all life on Earth.
The forests, waterways and communities of Central Appalachia are more than beautiful, they are unparalleled within the temperate zone on Earth. This is a biodiverse, climate resilient landscape where plants, animals and natural systems are well positioned to persist in the face of climate change. The vast carbon reserves of the region provide a critical nature-based climate solution. The communities of the region are making a transition to a new economy where wild places are essential to an equitable future.
Our special place is at risk. Biodiversity loss, climate impacts and fragmented communities are the most pressing issues facing people and our planet today. It is critical to address these three interconnected challenges holistically, particularly in globally significant places, like ours.
Kentucky Natural Lands Trust is committed to addressing these challenges and is rising to meet the needs of our time. Your support is crucial to our mission.
In 2024, KNLT protected more than 2,500 acres of wildlands, increasing the pace of our conservation efforts. These wild places safeguard vital forests and waterways while providing access to nature and contributing to the emerging outdoor economy. Additionally, our team stewarded vast tracts of wildlands with conservation partners and collaborated on critical biodiversity research projects.
With your partnership KNLT is bringing more awareness to the importance of Central Appalachia. This year we hired our first Outreach Coordinator who is actively engaging communities in the region to bolster our conservation efforts. At the same time, we are networking and partnering with diverse organizations throughout Appalachia and around the country to advance conservation. You can read more about our 2024 highlights in our Annual Report.
Our local actions are globally significant. We must continue to expand and accelerate our work to keep pace with the challenges and opportunities facing the region. And we cannot do this without your help. KNLT depends on the support of people like you. That’s why I am pleased to share some exciting news. Right now, you have a chance to activate TWO matches when you donate by December 31st.
First, our partners at Atira Conservation will match every dollar donated to KNLT before the end of the year up to $50,000. Also, a generous individual is matching all monthly recurring donations with a $100 gift!
When you donate by Dec. 31:
- Your donation will be doubled by Atira Conservation (until we reach $50,000)
- Your monthly gift will be boosted with a one-time $100 match
Please consider donating today to have your gift doubled by Atira Conservation. And if you make it a recurring gift, you can earn the challenge match AND the monthly recurring donation match. Whatever you choose, I hope you choose to give what you can in support of our wildlands movement.
With gratitude and peace you find in wild places,
Greg Abernathy
