Free Lichen Workshop

January 22, 2016 - January 24, 2016

Our partners the Pine Mountain Settlement School are hosting a free lichen workshop.

In phase two of this 3-session workshop, participants will help collect important scientific information about Kentucky’s air quality. We will learn to identify lichen and take measurements to submit to a website where scientists can use this data to learn more about the health of our environment.

We will hear from Roberta Burnes, the education specialist with the Kentucky Division of Air Quality, Billy Bennett, Director of the Center for Environmental Education at EKU, and Melinda Wilder, Director of Natural Areas at EKU about how to collect and share our data. We will spend the rest of the day investigating the lichen on trees in the James E. Bickford State Nature Preserve, located on the Settlement School’s campus, and at Lilley Cornett Woods in Letcher County.

All ages welcome. No prior experience necessary. Please dress for the outdoors and bring snacks and water for the trail.
